Burning wood is one of the oldest ways in which we have produced heat within our homes. However, there are downsides to this, including creating carbon monoxide and fine soot particles that can accumulate on walls and furniture. But what alternatives are there to burn on your wood burner.
Pellets are made with sawdust and other lumber byproducts that would have gone to landfills. As they contain less moisture than logs, they create fewer pollutants. To use these in an existing fireplace, you will need a fireplace insert to handle them safely.
Another option would be installing a gas insert into your fireplace and using liquid propane or connecting it to the mains gas. The downside to this is that it cannot handle heating a large room as a lot of the heat escapes up the chimney.
If neither of these options is suitable, we recommend checking your fireplace regularly to keep it as clean as possible.
